Continuing with my read of the latest core books for Dungeons & Dragons I’ve now just finished the Dungeon Master’s Guide 2024.
As with the new Player’s Handbook this has had a general update since 2014, cleaning up presentation and wording in a lot of places without taking too much away from the guide for DM’s.
When I was reading this I suddenly realised that there is so much in here that seems to be system agnostic and would help any DM to setup and run adventures and campaigns. Yes there are system specific bits but those can be fudged or just ignored, but the basics of building a campaign and being a DM are here, not quite as basic as that infamous Dummies book from a while back, but accessible.
Though at times there just seems to be too much, so much to read and comprehend, so I wouldn’t recommend reading this through in one sitting but to pick the bits you need and get to know them well before moving on to another part. Though a front to back slow read through could be good for new DMs.
As with the Player’s Handbook I did find it easier to access the information I was after (added tons of little bookmarks to this now) and that the information was clearer which always helps.
I really enjoyed the new Bastion system though and will be offering it out to players.
Overall a good read that sometimes felt overwhelming but I know I was reading it in a weird way, like a book rather than a container of information to help a gaming system, so don’t do that…
