The Lost Expedition

I think I got this at Games Expo 2023 as well as several others, can’t really remember and it’s been gathering dust in my games storage ever since.

Dragging this out as it’s going to be part of my Board Game Challenge 2026, ten playthroughs of ten different games., to encourage me to actually play games rather than just collect games.

A card-based survival game for solo, co-operative, or team-based play.

Legendary explorer Percy Fawcett marched deep into the Amazon in search of El Dorado. He was never seen again. Your team is following in his footsteps, but in searching for riches you must be careful not to lose the greatest treasure of all – your life.

Make the best of your food, your ammunition and your health, as you plunge deep into the jungle. Choose your path carefully to ensure you’re ready for the pitfalls which may occur. Play solo or co-operatively to survive the expedition, or play head-to-head to see which group can reach the lost city first.

From award-winning designer Peer Sylvester and acclaimed comic artist Garen Ewing, The Lost Expedition is a game of hard choices on the road to El Dorado.

So after reading the rules a couple of times and watching a couple of playthrough videos I felt reasonably confident enough to give it a try solo (with no illusion that I would win, it looks a tough game, bit like Friday) with the idea of teaching it to my partner at a later time.

In the box is:

  • 6 Character cards
  • 9 Jungle cards
  • 56 Adventure cards
  • 2 Reference cards
  • 2 Playing pieces
  • 24 Health tokens
  • 24 Food tokens
  • 12 Ammo tokens
  • 2 Expedition leader tokens

Well that first playthrough was nerve-wracking, I lost (of course) but not quickly. It was a slow, but inevitable, attrition from the very start.

Each stage was very straightforward, especially after watching a couple of video playthroughs, the mechanics of the game are simple enough though the game itself is extremely unforgiving.

Will have to really think out the order of card play a bit more than I did this time though there is a lot of randomness in the card placement.

Enjoyed it, not as brain scratchy as Friday, but still tough on any mistakes or bad luck.

I didn’t take a photo of every stage just setup, a couple of shifts, and the end with all my explorers dead.
