Dungeons & Dragons: Monster Manual 2024

Dungeons & Dragons: Monster Manual 2024

I’ve been working my way through this for the last couple of months as a book to dip in and out of, reading a monster here and there on an evening.

I’ve always loved a good Monster Manual and this is a good one, not great, but still doing it’s job.

Lot’s more monsters this time, still got some great art, and the little snippets of lore you do get are nice and atmospheric.

As usual when reading a Monster Manual I get more ideas about setting up encounters than I ever do with the Dungeon Master’s Guide or Player’s Manual.

In fact, I got a roughed out list of about 20 encounters in the first quarter of the book and this is one of the reasons I just dip into the book now and again as I usually spend some time sketching out some rough ideas with each entry.

The organisation took a little time to get used to though, and I still prefer when things like Dragons were lumped into a single category and each sub-type was explained there, seemed more intuitive.

It also felt like there was less flavour and lore to each creature in the book which for oldies to the game isn’t much of a problem but it leaves something lacking for people new to the game, maybe giving them less to use when imagining the creatures.

Overall a nice addition but again felt a little lacking compared to previous Monster Manuals.
